Thing you should know before starting freelancing.

You want to start freelancing? Thing you should know before starting freelancing.

So You Want to Be a Freelancer? Here's What You Need to Know

If you’re an aspiring freelancer, you probably have many questions about the freelance lifestyle and about how to make your freelance career work best for you. The good news is that you don’t have to figure everything out on your own; if you know where to look, you can find all the information you need to make wise decisions along the way, find clients, and bring in steady income as a freelancer.

Is there enough work for me?

In some ways, starting your own business as a freelancer can be easier than launching an independent venture in other industries. There are few barriers to entry, you don’t need a lot of capital, and there’s virtually no overhead. Still, it’s important not to overestimate how much work you will have or underestimate how much time it will take and money it will cost you—especially if you’re not familiar with specific services like graphic design or web development.

Tax Deductions for Home Office

Starting your own freelance business means you get to work in your pajamas and keep everything under one roof. That also means that you'll need to set up an office and make sure it meets all of your home-based needs—and possibly take tax deductions on it, too. A number of tax deductions are available for freelancers with home offices.

Is this something I really want to do?

Before you leap into freelancing, ask yourself why you want to freelance in particular. There are some common reasons that people give for leaving salaried positions: they hate their boss, they want freedom over when and where they work, they want less stress—or more money. Once you’ve figured out what your motivation is for wanting to leave your day job and start freelancing full-time, think about whether or not it’s something that you can actually achieve. If it is, then great!

Can I afford not having a full-time job?

The first thing you should ask yourself is if you can afford not having a full-time job. Freelancing means you may be taking on more risk than if you had just taken another job in your field with benefits. If that doesn’t scare you, then ask yourself why freelancing is so appealing. Is it because there are no hours? The ability to work from home and set your own schedule?

How am I going to get clients?

If you want to be a freelancer, you’re going to need clients. And because freelancers work independently, finding clients is entirely up to you. There are two basic ways of getting clients: organic growth and paid marketing.

Should I take on small jobs or wait until I have a lot of experience?

It’s up to you. Small jobs help you hone your skills, build relationships and get your name out there. They’re also ideal for testing out new niches and figuring out what kind of work you like best.

Am I too old (or young)?

Though it’s hard to say definitively when someone is too old or too young to begin freelancing, it’s worth knowing what’s typical. The average age of full-time freelancers is 39, but some people begin in their 20s and many more enter their 50s and beyond. I started freelancing at 28 and am currently 33, so there are obviously exceptions for both ends of that spectrum.

What if it all goes wrong?

While starting your own freelance business is an exciting step, there are things you need to think about, so don’t rush into it. Talk to other freelancers about what happens if work dries up or you start too late in life. If you’re good at your job, people will find you again when they have work available—so make sure you choose your clients wisely, and that they really need what you do.

Where do I start my business legally - as an LLC, Sole Proprietorship, etc.?

In order to start your business legally, you need to register it with your state. There are 3 general types of business structures: 1) Sole Proprietorship, 2) LLC (Limited Liability Company), and 3) Corporation. Depending on what you will be doing with your business, you should choose an appropriate structure that provides some protection from liabilities of owning and operating a business.
